A Journey to Conquering Odds

Our Magsaysay MOL Ship Management (MMSM) took a step forward upon acquiring a new vessel to join their pool of ships and she is MV Vega Dream, a Cape-Size Bulk Carrier, which was previously managed by MOLSHIP Hong Kong and was manned by Indian officers and Myanmar as ratings.

Not far from being a neophyte is how we felt when we first took MV Vega Dream from previous management. Most of us felt bewildered. The first obstacle that we have to overcome is language barrier and cultural differences. The catch there, is how we are going to arrive at a common denominator to satisfy our queries.

5Next were the piles of papers to amend and revisions to be made in order to attest the veracity and authenticity of the documents handed over as well as, to conform to legislations of different governing bodies whereas time management is of great matter. Then there were the adjustments we have to make and the acquaintance we have to do on her machineries and equipment. Her hatch cover and gangway ladder attachments were some to mention as uniquely designed.

The crew had a really brief time to take over, but still confident enough to undertake the responsibility efficiently. Each members of the crew from Deck and Engine department didn’t waste any opportunity provided in order to obtain and collate every ounce of information which we do believe is crucial.

Sleep deprivation, restless minds and bodies, separation anxieties, pressure and stress on the other hand were also the encumbrances we have to 6triumph over, but these did not made us falter, it rather drove us to attain our objective and also because all hands were so eager to cope with the demands of the situation in order to uphold and live up with the reputation of the quality Filipino seafarers have.

As days roll along, we have successfully took her over and up to date, man her safely. Every one of us may be employed from different regions and culture, but we were all running for the same end – putting ourselves in the mercy of nature, always in a tight schedule and giving no margin for error. Experience, knowledge and skills as well as a good sense of leadership, discipline and camaraderie were the contributing factors that proclaimed us victors over uncertainties.

8We do believe that, taking good care of her under our means as her name suggests, “VEGA” being one of the brightest and prominent amongst numerous stars in the vast skies will   eventually outshine others from the dawn of her new era.
