Performance
We are now in the first quarter of another year. Before I go on, let me again greet all of you dear friends and colleagues a happy and great new year 2017 ahead!
We have a lot of things to thank for in 2016. One of them is our very good and sound performance as a whole according to the criteria set for and required by our principal and partner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. We were able to achieve again the 4 zeroes : zero Fatal Accident, zero Serious Marine Accident, zero Oil Pollution and zero Cargo Damage. These were coupled with and enhanced by a very minimal down time incurred by our managed vessels! This is not an ordinary achievement what with an average of 18 managed ships the whole year round. The risks were always there each day of the year and I’m very glad that, with the joint efforts of shipboard and shore staff, we were able to tame down, mitigate and control the risks. With the same fervor of solid cooperation and never ending assistance and support to each other, I am very sure that we will be able to continue and sustain, if not improve, the same feat this year!
Despite the dedicated measures that MOL, MMSM, MMMI and the crew onboard have carefully and painstakingly put in place and vigorously implemented, one can ask himself why the unwanted and unintentional accidents still occur. Did we miss something? Did we miss any training and upgrading needs? How deep is our involvement in the latest craze behavioral-based safety? So many questions can be asked and so many answers can be replied. In our quest for continual improvement, we believe that there are still measures to be done in order to mitigate, if not remove, the incidents onboard and improve the lives of our shipboard colleagues. These measures are actually complimenting the back to basics principle that we are always trying to pursue. I can say that these are not additional burden to any one because, as I mentioned, these are complimentary to those that we already practice. I will take up these additional measures in the issues of our newsletter starting now. One of such measure is to fervently promote our long-standing invitation to our senior officers to sit-in MMSM office for about 5 days prior boarding (train the trainors and onboard managers) for the following:
· Familiarize themselves with the vessel assignment by viewing the records of the vessel in MMSM database
· Get updates on the latest development onboard by going through the latest communication exchanges among the vessel, MMSM, MOL, vendors, agents, etc…
· Take the OPM awareness challenge
· Get to know, mingle and be familiar with all MMSM office staff
· Undergo the BID personality challenge for better self-awareness
· Attend the newly developed intimate training in management of personal and work improvements.
What is the best thing to do prior your employment but to know where you are going and be friendly with your support group? Is it better to shy away from the 5 important days of pre-employment ammunitions? Those who have religiously undergone the experience gave no less than very positive feedback. Why? That question could not be asked because the answer is very obvious. For those who have already attended, I would like to encourage you to continue the practice. For those who have not attended yet, I am inviting you to attend. This is for your own benefit. We in MMSM will spend extra time for you in order to be with you.
See you in the next issue. Meanwhile, I do wish you all once again a safe sailing, as always!!
